Hello all!

Sorry for the short notice - like we wanna go tonight!

I saved from the list a reco for the Royal Naz - about a year ago - and was
wondering whether any of you might spare the time to update me on how that
rates today in your opinions, and if there might be some other suggestions
please?

We like all sorts and are always ready for something different.

We live in Chester, UK.

Thanks for yor time.

A bit late now but for future reference I would advise you to give Rusholme
a miss. Its very overrated. Stay on the motorway for a couple more junctions
and head into Bolton. The Sunar Gow in Burnden and the Royal Balti in
Farnworth are superb. If it must be Manchester head into the town centre.
There are couple of good 'uns' who's names escape me at the minute. I think
one is called 'Spice'.
The Royal Naz and Sheer Khan in Rusholme are pretty consistent but I've
never had anything outstanding at either.

I've been to the Kailash (Nepalese!) a couple of times and found it very
good. If you're feeling flush I rate Shimla Pinks, but that's much more
a "modern Anglo-Indian Restaurant" than a "curry house"... impressive
service, atmosphere, food... and prices. If you want "classic" Indian
restaurant food the Gaylord does it extremely well, but to be honest
it's unexciting comfort food....

TBH I often prefer to eat Chinese or Thai in Manchester though (Pacific
is excellent - Philippe Starck-ish interiors, completely separate Chinese
and Thai kitchens.... and superb food). I think the Curry Mile is a
bit over-rated, at least in comparison with Bradford - far too little
variation between the restaurants. (One place I keep meaning to go,
but it seems to keep fairly odd hours, is the Jowata "Pan-African"
place at the top of Deansgate...)

There's one little place at the Manchester end of WIlmslow Road that
specialises in dosas - can't remember its name but the quality's
excellent (not quite Diwana Bhel Poori House, but what is?) and the
price is pretty good.

Tastes and opinions vary a lot. Only ventured into Pacific once, and swore
never to go back. Expensive food, outrageously priced wine we didn't order,
the meal took ages to arrive when the restaurant wasn't busy and it wasn't
anything special. Also they were very put out at the idea that some of us
wanted Thai and some wanted Chinese served at the same table. They quite
seriously expected us to pick one or the other and go sit in a different
place. The entire point of going there in the first place was to
accommodate people with different tastes.

Ditto on both of those.

Thanks Hypo, Pete, Steph and Mike for your very useful input. I have saved
all the messages for the next time we go East ( at least from Chester!).
Lots more places to try. Thank you all for bothering.

As regards your experience with the Pacific Steph, I agree the place has at
the very least a funny atmosphere. I got the impression that the Thai bit
and the Chinese bit were in competition and not the same firm. The Pacific
bit I too found expensive and over-bearing yet I have never had such good
and cheap Thai food anywhere as upstairs in the Thai bit - at lunchtime
anyway. There were so many courses at their buffet and all as much as you
can eat style for about 7 pounds. 2 sittings - 12 and 1.30. Booking pretty
well essential. I would most definitely recommend that place at lunchtime. I
haven't been there for 6 months so I suppose it is still the
same.............................

The Pacific used to be the Emperor and was pricey but excellent. The New
Emperor is next door to the Pacific and is owned by the same people - at
least it was a year ago - and the food was as good as the old Emperor.

Thanks again all

Actually that's where we went that night Elaine! My lad went ice-skating
opposite.

I was well impressed with the service and the menus. It was very busy which
says it all really. I've lived within 3 miles of it for 15 and years and
never been before. Have you seen their Xmas menus? Very extensive. Curry on
Xmas Day - a thought that!!

Regards

and thanks

Sorry I didn't see this in time.

Rusholme isn't really in the 'something different' business, the menus are
broadly the same. Having said that, there is just one restaurant that has a
few bits of south Indian food like Idlis on the menu. I know how to find it
visually, but have no idea what it's called. If you are coming out of
Manchester city centre it's on the left, somewhere in the middle.
Definitely after the traffic lights for Claremont Road and the Clarence pub,
and before you get to the junction with a side road that has on road
diagonal parking spaces. It's one of the smaller one shop size places, with
I think a black signage.

Pop down the M61 to Atherton and try Shaan, Bolton Evening News
restaurant of the year 2003, amongst other things. When it was called
Savar's, it boasted a "Birmingham Balti chef". I don't know whether or
not he's still there, but the Balti curries were and are superb.

NB this is an Indian restaurant, not a Bangladeshi one, AFAICT.

I'll second that. The Far Pavilion by the station was always pretty decent
as well.

I still prefer the lunch time Indian restaurants in the rag trade
area near Victoria station.
Top quality food at rock bottom prices.

For lunch, I agree. I'd describe their location as round the back end of
the Arndale and Debenhams, they aren't that close to Victoria station.

And the Shalimar opens evenings at weekends now, too.
